About Esme

1993 Custom 46’ Baraka Cutter

ESME is a custom-built 46’ cutter that has just returned from an approximately nine-month family cruise through the Caribbean and to Panama, a real-world voyage that speaks to her offshore capability, livability, and proven use as a cruising sailboat.

Built in Florida in 1993 by Rand Speas and Guy Erickson, ESME is based on Chuck Paine design lineage and constructed using cold-molded marine plywood with epoxy and fiberglass sheathing. Her construction approach and build story were featured in Boatbuilder Magazine (March/April 1996) as a cold-molded epoxy case study (article available upon request).

ESME is a heavy-displacement (18-ton) offshore cruising sailboat with a 63’ mast, 5’6” draft, and versatile cutter rig. She features a pilothouse-style raised deckhouse that provides excellent shelter and visibility; the primary helm is located aft in the cockpit, protected by a dodger.

Inside, the layout is practical and comfortable with three cabins and six berths, generous storage, and the kind of volume and utility that works well for liveaboard life, extended cruising, or comfortable time at anchor. This is a straightforward, serviceable cruising boat intended for sailors who appreciate traditional sail handling and simple, proven systems.

The owners invested in numerous updates and improvements during 2024–2025 in preparation for and during their cruising season. Documentation and receipts are available upon request.

A Walker Bay fiberglass dinghy with a Mercury 15 HP outboard (with factory warranty through 2028)

Specifications

General

Name: ESME

Year: 1993

Builder: Rand Speas & Guy Erickson (Custom)

Design Lineage: Chuck Paine

Location Built: Florida

USCG Documentation Number: 1255060

Hull Type: Monohull

Rig: Cutter

Dimensions

LOA: 46’

Beam: 14’

Draft: 5’6”

Displacement: Approx. 18 tons

Construction

Hull: Cold-molded marine plywood with epoxy and fiberglass sheathing

Deck: Fiberglass/epoxy over marine plywood

Superstructure: Cedar strip plank construction

Keel: Lead keel

Skeg: Yes

Machinery

Engine: Westerbeke 82B diesel

Horsepower: 82 HP

Engine Hours: Approx. 3,880

Transmission: Hurth Marine HSW 250-3.0R

Propeller: Max-Prop, 3-blade

Electrical

DC / AC: 12V DC / 125V AC shore power

House Batteries: Lithium system, 200Ah

Charging: Solar (2 × 100W panels) and Victron DC-DC charger

Tankage

Fuel: Two Moeller tanks, approx. 54 gallons total

Fresh Water: Approx 200 gallons

Holding Tank: Approx. 45 gallons

Rigging & Sails

Mast / Boom: Aluminum

Standing Rigging: Stainless steel (serviceable)

Running Rigging: Replaced 2024–2025

Sail Inventory

New fully-battened mainsail (Mack Sails, 2024)

New staysail (Mack Sails, 2024)

Roller-furling genoa

Spinnaker

Spare staysail

Ground Tackle

Primary Anchor: Rocna Vulcan 20kg ( May 2025)

Chain: 100’ of 3/8” BBB galvanized chain ( May 2025)

Additional Anchors: Bruce and CQR

Tender

Dinghy: Walker Bay fiberglass

Outboard: Mercury 15 HP (2025) factory warranty through 2028

Call today and set up your private showing!

Disclaimer

The Company offers the details of this vessel in good faith but cannot guarantee or warrant the accuracy of this information nor warrant the condition of the vessel.
