How we sell a yacht
Six steps, one broker, start to finish.
The same broker prices her, markets her, shows her and closes her. Read the full guide to selling →
- 01
Price her on evidence
Asking and sold comparables, condition, hours and refits, and how long similar yachts have been sitting. A price that brings offers, not just calls.
- 02
Prepare her
What to fix before a buyer's surveyor finds it, what to leave alone, and the paperwork to have ready on day one.
- 03
Present her properly
Photographs, video where she warrants it, and accurate specifications, on a page of her own here with a printable spec sheet and a QR code for the dock.
- 04
Put her in front of the market
Listed on the IYBA MLS, where member brokers search for their buyers, with a commission split that gives every one of them a reason to show her.
- 05
Show her and sea trial her
We arrange the showings and the sea trial and represent you through both, so you don't have to be there.
- 06
Negotiate and close
Offer, survey, any renegotiation, escrow and the documentation transfer, handled through to the wire.

Seller questions
What does it cost to sell a yacht through a broker?
Brokerage commission is a percentage of the sale price, commonly 10%, paid from the proceeds at closing and shared with the buyer's broker when there is one. You see the exact terms in the listing agreement before you sign anything.
How is the asking price set?
From comparable yachts for sale now and what similar yachts have actually sold for, adjusted for condition, engine hours, refits and equipment, and for how long similar boats have been sitting. The tool above shows the first part; a broker adds the rest.
How long will it take to sell?
Price, segment and condition matter more than anything else. The first 30 to 60 days on the market get the most attention, so it pays to launch ready and priced right rather than adjusting later.
Can I keep using the boat while she is listed?
Usually, yes. Tell your broker your plans so showings and sea trials can be scheduled around them, and keep her clean and ready to show.
What paperwork will I need?
Documentation or title, registration, maintenance records and manuals, any warranty transfers, and a payoff letter from your lender if there is a loan on her.
