The short version
- Decide where you will fish or cruise first. It sets the size, the hull and the range you need.
- Outboard hours mean little on their own. Maintenance records and how the hours were put on matter more.
- Check the transom, the deck around the console and the wiring with extra care.
- A recent repower can be worth a meaningful premium. Ask for the paperwork.
The term covers everything from a 19′ bay boat to a 50′ quad-outboard offshore machine. Most of the decision is made before you look at a single listing.
Choose the size by the water you will use
- Inshore and the Intracoastal: shallower draft and a smaller footprint make life easy. Think 20′ to 28′.
- Nearshore and reef fishing: a deeper vee and more freeboard earn their keep. Think 28′ to 35′.
- Offshore, canyon runs and Bahamas crossings: range, fuel capacity and seakeeping come first. Think 35′ and up, often with three or four outboards.
Outboards, hours and repowers
Hours alone tell you little. An engine run regularly and serviced on schedule can be in better shape at 800 hours than one that sat for years at 200. Ask for:
- Service records, including water pumps, lower-unit oil and fuel filters.
- Any warranty remaining and whether it transfers.
- A compression test and engine diagnostics as part of your survey. Modern outboards store fault codes and usage data.
A recent repower can be worth a real premium, because new outboards are a large share of the boat's value. Make sure the rigging, gauges and controls were updated with them.
What to inspect on a used center console
- Transom: outboards hang a lot of weight on it. Look for cracks around the bracket and moisture readings in a cored transom.
- Deck and stringers: soft spots around the console, leaning post and hatches.
- Wiring: corrosion behind the console, and whether added electronics were wired properly.
- Fuel system: tank condition, fuel lines and any signs of water in the fuel.
- T-top and hardware: stress cracks and loose fasteners.
- Livewells and pumps: they work hard and fail quietly.

Common questions
How many hours is too many on an outboard?
There is no single number. Maintenance history and how the hours were accumulated matter more. A compression test and diagnostic read during survey tell you far more than the hour meter.
Is a repowered center console worth more?
Often, yes. New outboards are a large part of the boat's value. Confirm the paperwork, warranty status and that the rigging was updated with the engines.
What size center console do I need to cross to the Bahamas?
It depends on conditions and experience, but many owners choose 35′ and up with ample fuel range for regular crossings. Always plan around the weather window.
